Today we’re going all the way back to 1962 and it’s opening night of One Stop The Musical, staring glamour-puss Barbara Windsor and old squinty eyes himself Frank Sinatra. The classic musical – famously a coming together of Rodgers and Hammerstein and Harry Hill – told the tale of the shop girl whose bra kept on coming off with hilarious consequences and her on-off romance with the crooning gangster shop manager named Ken. It ran for 23 years, which was a record at the time and is widely recognised as the inspiration for Cats, Les Misérables and, of course, The X Factor.
The two stars went on to have successful careers in their own right – Windsor as a cackling seductress and Sinatra as a window cleaner – before being famously reunited in BBC EastEnders as Peggy and Phil Mitchell.
Today, a One Stop memorial stands in the exact spot where this photo was taken as a reminder of the good times and if you listen closely when walking by you can sometimes hear the ghosts of both stars singing – which is really rather eerie, particularly as only one of them is dead.
