Following the sad and rather untimely death of Steven Hawking – arguably the greatest British scientist of the modern era – Wivenhoe Town Council has revealed that it plans to unveil a commemorative plaque to Jim Bowen outside of The Station pub in downtown Wivenhoe.
Working as a comedian back in the seventies when comics were either racist, misogynists or kiddie fiddlers, Bowen broke the mould by choosing to be none of these, instead opting to put his phenomenal general knowledge and extensive collection of speed boats into good use in the Sunday afternoon quiz show Bullseye.
Disliked by both quiz fans and sports enthusiasts alike, Bullseye teamed up piss-poor dart players with peculiar-looking brain boxes in a general knowledge-darts quiz that allowed people to win a selection of prizes including everything from his and her’s carriage clocks to monogramed dressing gowns and Sodastream drinks makers.
Commenting on the commemoration plans, Wivenhoe Mayor Dame Dannii Minogue noted: “Jim hated darts, never stepped inside The Station pub and to my knowledge never even entered Wivenhoe. Hell, I don’t even know who he is – which makes this a perfect tribute to a truly super, smashing, lovely fella.”
