Good news Winter sports fans! Wivenhoe Co-op has announced that every Saturday evening the staff will be clearing the shelves away so that members of the public can partake in Wivenhoe’s national sport – ice skating.
As store manager Alan Manager explains: “It’s simple really, around about 5:00pm, just when the shop is getting really busy I shut down all the tills but one and get the staff to move all the shelving out the way. We then spray the floor down with water, open up all the freezer doors and then by 8:30 it’s skating time, baby!”
The new initiative is the result of a public vote with those green plastic counter thingies on what the Co-op should spend its ill-gotten gains on.
This month, ice-skating got the most votes, closely followed by turning the cheese counter into a giant public fondue, while helping out the poor and needy received just one vote – by accident apparently.
