Not so long ago, people were content to make do with just a simple dog, cat or armadillo for a pet. But in these more enlightened times it appears that no animal is too strange. Whether it be the family that owns a water buffalo down by the church, the giraffe that’s cooped up in a guinea pig pen behind Co-op or the swarm of locusts on Harvey Road, Wivenhovians like their pets well exotic, innit?
But the residents of the Tower of Power on Tower Road have taken the craze to the extreme with their new acquisition – a 40 tonne gorilla, named King. Susan Flower, who lives in the Tower of Power, explained: “The kids used to have an ant each and they loved playing with them or taking them for walks, but we were always losing them and the amount of urine they left everywhere was just too much to deal with. So in the end, we decided that an enormous gorilla was the logical step – he’s got such lovely toes…”
Unfortunately, not everyone on Tower Road is so enthusiastic about the pet. An engorged resident explained to The Watcher: “He’s stripped all the bananas from me bush and pretty much every plane that goes by he swats out of the sky like they’re flies. I’m sick to death of finding bits of Boeing 747s on me drive.”
